Ryegrass grows best when planted in late spring, usually mid-April to early May. However, as long as the grass is established before the first frost of the year, it can also be planted in the fall as ground cover. Plant at least 30 days before a frost or freeze is anticipated.
Ryegrass prefers slightly acidic, silty loam or loam soils. An annual application of a nitrogen-based fertilizer will help to establish a strong and healthy root system. Winter rye in particular is good for late fall planting.
Ryegrass, especially winter rye, is extremely cold resistant and provides excellent ground cover for the winter. In climates where winter is cold and dry, ryegrass makes an exceptional choice for ground cover and helps prevent soil damage and erosion.
