How to Cook or Steam Fresh Asparagus

Steaming asparagus is the best cooking method for retaining the vegetable’s nutrients. Here's a simple guide on how to steam fresh asparagus:

1. Rinse asparagus under cold, running water to remove any dirt or debris.

2. Trim away the tough woody ends of the asparagus stalks.

3. Place a steaming rack or colander inside a pot and add water to a level below the rack. Bring the water to a simmer.

4. Arrange the asparagus stalks on the steaming rack, ensuring they are in a single layer.

5. Cover the pot with a lid and let the asparagus steam for 3 to 6 minutes, depending on the thickness of the stalks.

6. Check for doneness by piercing the asparagus with a sharp knife or fork — it should be tender but not mushy.

7. Once cooked, immediately remove the asparagus from the pot to prevent overcooking.

8. Serve the steamed asparagus immediately, tossed with some butter, olive oil, salt, and pepper, or drizzle it with a flavorful dressing of your choice.
