Hyacinth plants have a mature height of about 12 inches with four to six narrow, strap-like leaves. The flower stalks with clusters of small flowers emerge from the center of the foliage. The funnel-shaped, six-petal blooms range in color from yellow, orange, pink, red, blue or white.
Plant hyacinth bulbs in well-drained, fertile soil during late summer or early fall. The flowers thrive best in areas with cool weather and prefer sunny to partially shaded sites. Avoid planting in heavy shade. Water the plants regularly until flowering finishes and stems start to droop.
Cultivars of hyacinth include Amsterdam, with a dark pink color; jon bos, with crimson flowers; City of Haarlem, with distinctly yellow blooms; lady derby, with pale pink flowers; and the pure white l'innocence.
