How to Soak Garlic Before Planting

A garlic bulb contains cloves that you can separate from the bulb and plant. If you decide that you want to plant the garlic cloves, then you will need to soak them properly. Soaking garlic will prevent fungi, insects and other diseases from infecting the cloves. Once you soak the cloves, you can then plant them into the ground in moist, well-draining soil. The cloves need planted at three to five inches in the soil and at least 6 inches apart.

Place the garlic cloves into a 3-gallon bucket or larger so that you can stir all the items. Add 1 gallon of warm water, 1 tbsp. of white vinegar, 1 tbsp. of baking soda and 1 tbsp. of liquid seaweed. Mix the contents until the baking soda dissolves.

    • 3

Allow the garlic cloves to soak overnight in the mixture.

    • 4

Remove the garlic cloves with a slotted spoon. Remove any loose skin from the cloves. Place them off to the side in a bowl.

Soak the garlic cloves in rubbing alcohol. The cloves need to be completely submerged in the rubbing alcohol only three to four minutes. Plant the garlic cloves immediately after they soak.
