How do I Propagate Clivia?

Clivia is an unusual plant with striking orange or yellow blooms. Since they are expensive plants, it's beneficial to grow your own from seed or multiply them through separation. Both methods are simple and usually successful. Separate clivias in spring when they are starting to grow, and they should only be separated every five years.

Instructions

  1. Propagating From Seed

    • 1

Remove the fleshy outer cover from the seeds and clean well. Plant seeds as soon as possible after harvesting for best results.

    • 2

Fill a container with a humus-rich well-draining potting mix. Place the seeds on top of the soil approximately two inches apart.

    • 3

Push the seeds into the mix so that the top is barely covered and place in the shade. Keep the mix moist but not wet until seeds sprout, usually within four to six weeks. Watch closely for fungal growth on top of the soil.

    • 4

Fertilize monthly from March through September with an all-purpose liquid fertilizer after they have three leaves. Leave seedlings in the containers for up to two years before repotting. They grow slowly and need to mature before they are moved.

    Propagating Clivia By Division

    • 5

Lift a clump of clivia out of the ground or remove a large plant from its pot. Carefully pull offsets apart to keep from damaging roots or cut them off with a sharp knife.

    • 6

Place the offset in a pot large enough to hold all the roots and fill with potting mix up to the top of the roots. Water well and place in the shade.

    • 7

Fertilize monthly from March through September with an all-purpose liquid fertilizer or use time-released fertilizer pellets at 1 tsp. per gallon of soil.
