Do Pomegranate Trees Lose Their Leaves?

A pomegranate is a seed-filled fruit that is grown in many areas of the world. It is native to parts of India, Iran, Egypt, Southeastern Europe and Asia. It is grown extensively in Spain and was brought to both California and Mexico by the missionaries of the 16th century. The fruit grows on a plant that can be cultivated as either a bush or a small tree. It grows well in hot climates, and is also very cold-hardy. Whether or not the tree loses its leaves depends on the climate in which it is grown.
  1. Cultivation

    • The pomegranate tree can be grown from cuttings placed in the ground, and it can live for many years. Trees as old as 200 years have been found in some of the pomegranate's native territories. In general, however, it will be a viable source of fruit for about 15 years, after which its productivity will taper off. In areas where the climate is humid or the summers are not very hot, the tree will grow, but will not produce fruit. The pomegranate tree is deciduous and normally loses its leaves every year, but in areas where the climate is mild year-round the leaves may not fall off.

    Variations in Growth

    • A pomegranate bush grows to about 7 feet high, with dark green, oval-shaped leaves. The bush tends to be very dense, which can make it hard to harvest the fruit, as the slender branches also have thorns. The bush can be kept trimmed and trained to grow as a tree, in which case it may get as much as 20 feet tall. The spring blossoms are a bright orange-red, making this tree very attractive as an ornamental addition to the landscape.

    Requirements

    • The pomegranate can grow in many different locations, and is grown extensively in Arizona and California. It does best in drier areas, but to produce fruit it needs irrigation during the growing season. It can withstand very hot temperatures and is able to tolerate cold as low as 10 degrees F, though not all cultivars are so tolerant. In general it can handle more severe temperature extremes than citrus can, and is a good choice for growing in areas that are hot in the summer but get too cold for oranges, lemons and grapefruit.

    Uses

    • The pomegranate tree is grown for the round, red fruit as well as for its ornamental appearance. The fruit is anywhere from 2.5 to 5 inches in diameter and is filled with seeds surrounded by pulp. Both the seeds and the pulp can be eaten. The pomegranate is often juiced and consumed as a liquid rather than being eaten as a whole fruit. It provides a range of nutrients, including almost half a day’s supply of vitamin C and more than half the daily requirement of vitamin K.
