How to Fertilize Silver King Corn

Silver King sweet corn (Zea mays) grows up to 10 feet tall and produces 8-inch-long ears with white, sweet kernels. Silver King is a sweet corn variety that can grow in a wide range of climates for an autumn harvest, maturing in about 82 days. Beloved for its disease resistance and ease of growing, Silver King corn can be planted in traditional rows or in hills. Silver King corn can tolerate high heat and humidity, cross-pollinating by wind and thriving in rich soil, lots of moisture and full sunlight exposure. Like other corn types, Silver King corn plants are heavy feeders and require large amounts of nitrogen.

Instructions

    • 1

Spread 1 pound of 5-10-10 or 10-10-10 NPK fertilizer per 25 feet of row and mix it into the top 6 to 12 inches of soil in the planting bed for your Silver King corn. You can also apply bonemeal or well-rotted, aged manure prior to planting the corn, if you prefer an organic fertilizer.

    • 2

Side-dress the Silver King corn when the plants are about 8 inches tall with 1 pound of 10-10-10 NPK fertilizer per 25 feet of row. Spread the fertilizer along the rows about 4 inches away from the corn plants.

Side-dress your Silver King corn again when the tassels appear, using the same dosage of fertilizer. Water the fertilizer into the soil by generously applying the water to soak the soil.
