How to Grow an Epiphyllum Cactus

Epiphyllum cacti are native to Brazil. The plants are also known as orchid cacti, though they are not related to orchids. In the rain forest, these cacti grow on host trees. The stems can reach up to 2 feet in length, and produce large, vibrant flowers that give them their nickname. The flowers open after sunset and bloom during the growing season of late spring and early summer.

Instructions

    • 1

Pot the cactus in a plastic pot that has drainage holes in the bottom. The pot should be only slightly wider than the diameter of the cactus. Use a potting mixture of one part compost, three parts peat moss, and one part coarse sand. Repot the plant in new potting mix once a year.

    • 2

Keep the pot in a bright window out of direct sunlight from the fall to late spring. In late spring through early fall, keep the pot outside in a bright spot sheltered from direct afternoon sun.

    • 3

Water the cactus once a day or once every other day from late spring through summer. During winter, allow the soil to become dry to the touch between watering times. Water until moisture comes out the drainage holes.

    • 4

Apply a balanced, all-purpose fertilizer to the soil every other watering session in the spring and summer. In one feeding at the beginning, middle, and end of the growing season, use a high-potash fertilizer instead.
