How to Grow a Totem Pole Cactus

Native to Mexico and Baja California, the totem pole cactus (Lophocereus schottii f. monstrosus) grows best in U. S. Department of Agriculture hardiness zones 9 to 11. This light green spineless, lumpy, columnar cactus is slow growing, but can mature to 10 feet high with an equal width. Totem pole cactus work well near pools or other outside areas frequented by people because there are no spikes or thorns. Growing a totem pole cactus requires minimal maintenance once planted.

Instructions

    • 1

Find a planting site for the totem pole cactus in full sun with well-drained gravelly loam or sandy soil. In areas with heavier soil, mix coarse sand and gravel into the area to a depth of 12 inches.

    • 2

Dig a hole slightly shallower than the container holding the totem pole cactus and the same width.

    • 3

Remove the cactus from its container and place it in the hole. Make sure it is straight and not planted any deeper than it was in the pot.

    • 4

Fill in the area around the totem pole cactus, but do not water the plant for at least a week. Water the cactus after that, only during extreme dry periods from spring to fall.

    • 5

Add a layer of gravel or pebbles around the base of the totem pole cactus. This will keep weeds from growing and protect the trunk from rotting.
