How to Grow Agave Parryi

Originally native to Mexico, the Agave Parryi cactus spends the majority of its life as a spiky ball of thick leaves around one foot in height. The Agave Parryi can take many years to flower, but when it does, it produces a towering stalk of bright yellow flowers that can reach 15 feet tall. After the plant flowers, it dies. The Agave Parryi can take many years to flower. Because of this, the plant has earned the nickname "the century plant."

Instructions

    • 1

Prepare a moist seed germinating mix of compost or peat moss mixed with small pieces of gravel for drainage in a flowerpot. If you intend to transplant the cactus immediately after germination, the gravel is not necessary.

    • 2

Place your Agave Parryi seeds on the surface of the seed germinating mixture. These seeds require light to germinate and may not sprout if buried underground.

    • 3

Cover the flowerpot with clear plastic wrap and put the flowerpot in a warm, well lit location such as on a windowsill or a porch in direct sunlight.

    • 4

Water the soil just enough for it to remain moist. Too much water in the soil will deprive the germinating seed of vital oxygen.

    • 5

Wait 30 to 90 days for the Agave Parryi to germinate and begin to grow. The germination of these seeds may happen quickly or take months under even the best conditions.

    • 6

Transplant the germinated seed outdoors to a sandy, well drained soil. The Agave Parryi plant can be grown in either direct sunlight or partial shade. Direct sunlight will result in a taller, more compact plant while growing in the shade will result in a plant with wider and fuller spines.

    • 7

Water the Agave Parryi deeply once every month. Watering more than this is unnecessary since cacti are capable of holding onto moisture for long periods of time.

    • 8

Provide the Agave Parryi with a liquid, low nitrogen fertilizer every 20 days during the summer months. High nitrogen fertilizers may damage the plant.

    • 9

Treat with an insecticide or fungicide. Agave Parryi are very durable plants, but often fall victim to the Agave weevil and should be protected.
