How to Water Agave

Agave is a low-maintenance succulent that thrives in desert conditions. More than 50 agave varieties exist, ranging from as small as 1 foot tall and 1 foot wide to as large as 40 feet tall and 10 feet wide. Investigate which type of agave is appropriate for your landscape before you plant -- some grow to large sizes quickly, and others have spines or thorns, making them unsuitable for small yards or children's play areas. Regardless of your agave variety, you must take care not to overwater the plant, as too much water is one of the few conditions that will harm it.

Instructions

    • 1

Water the agave plant in at planting time. Soak the soil surrounding the plant so the root is thoroughly moist but not in standing water.

    • 2

Apply water to established agave only when the surrounding soil feels completely dry to the touch. Give it just enough water so that the soil is moist but not soaked.

    • 3

Water the agave deeply, completely wetting the ground surrounding it, once or twice per summer if rainfall is below average.

    • 4

Refrain from watering the agave during cold to freezing months. Remember that even desert areas can become extremely cold at night. Water only during warm enough periods that the moisture around the plant's roots will not freeze and damage the root system.
