Small Flowering Cactus Plants

Cactus plants are famous for their ability to grow in warmer climates and for their sharp pointy thorns that produce their famous texture. Their ability to grow small flowers adds to their memorable appearances. According to Gardening Resource, cactus flowers often have a sweet fragrance that complement their brightly colored petals.
  1. Barrel

    • The barrel cactus is known for its circular and dome-like shape and its bright yellow and white thorns. The thorns are particularly bright near the top of the cactus. The barrel cactus produces small flowers that bloom red, orange and yellow near the top of the dome.

The bright flowers have small, thin petals that come together in a round center. The center is usually a lighter color than the color of the petals. Once the flowers bloom their bright colors will make them the focus of the barrel cactus.

    Easter

    • The small Easter cactus has small pink flowers growing from the top of the cactus leaves. It has flat leaves with small thorns scattered around the leaf itself and around the edges. The flowers grow upward in a cone shape fashion, anywhere between a few flowers and several flower buds on each leaf.

    Hedgehog

    • The hedgehog cactus got its name from the many thorns that spike out from the cactus' main plant body. The main color of the cactus can barely been seen because of its many thorns, so the cactus itself appears to be beige or cream colored. This gives focus to its flowers, whose pink petals and yellow centers are bright when the flowers are in bloom. The flowers usually bloom on the top of the plant and grow in groups of two to four, depending on its size.

    Prickly Pear

    • The prickly pear cactus plant is a larger version of the Easter cactus, as the leaf surface is much larger. The thorns are also considerably larger and protrude from the surface of the leaves and the perimeter of each part of the cactus. The flowers that bloom from the prickly pear cactus are dark pink with a hollow center. They are similar to bell flowers but grow upward instead of downward. The flower buds appear on the upper perimeter of the cactus leaves and usually in groups of three or four.
