Is Weigela in the Honeysuckle Family?

Weigela (Weigela spp.) is a deciduous shrub that blooms with pink, purple, white, red or yellow funnel-shaped flowers. The plants are members of the honeysuckle family, according to the University of California Extension. Low-growing weigelas are popularly used in borders and taller ones for creating screens.
  1. Description

    • Weigela is also referred to as old-fashioned weigela. The plant has a mature height of up to 6 feet, depending on variety, with a 9- to 12-foot spread, and it is hardy in USDA zone 4. The stiff and coarse foliage is bronze, green or variegated and the flowers bloom from summer and well into fall.

    Cultural Requirements

    • Plant weigelas in areas of full sun and in a well-drained soil using bare-root plants in the spring before the start of new growth. Water them regularly to keep soil moist and apply mulch, as this will control weeds and conserve moisture. Weigelas maintain their shape with minimal pruning. If required, prune before flowering begins in early summer.

    Small Weigelas

    • Pink Poppet and Midnight Wine are the low-growing weigelas. Midnight Wine has pink flowers and burgundy foliage with a mature height of 1½ to 2 feet. Pink Poppet is also 2 feet tall with light pink blooms. Smaller weigelas perform well with annuals and perennials.
