Several cultivars of southern highbush blueberry grow especially well in northern California. Try Bluecrop, Sunshine Blue or Georgia Gem, as suggested by the University of California. Research done by the University of California Master Gardener program showed these cultivars to be among the best in producing high yields with good flavor.
The University of California recommends growing these blueberries in containers where they receive six hours of full sun daily. These southern highbush blueberries work well as container plants, with larger varieties requiring more pruning than compact types. Water frequently, as soil in containers dries out faster than in ground locations.
Plant two or more varieties to increase berry size, yield and length of harvest. Harvest may be extended from May until late July or early August in this manner. Freeze extra blueberries for later use.
