What Kind of Soil Is Needed to Grow Blueberries?

Blueberries are delicious fruits that originally grew wild in North America. Cultivation began early in the 20th century, and their popularity has been growing in recent times. Blueberries are particular about their needs and require good soil to thrive.
  1. Soil pH

    • Blueberries need acidic soil with a pH between 4.5 and 5.0 for best results. Soil pH can be determined with a basic soil pH test obtainable from your local county extension office.

    Organic Matter

    • Blueberries need plenty of organic matter, which can be added to the soil by mixing in peat, straw or other organic mulch. Organic matter increases soil fertility and soil properties.

    Soil Moisture

    • Well-drained soils with a water table approximately 14 to 22 inches below the surface are ideal for blueberries. Blueberries need a constant water supply but will not tolerate standing water or soggy soils.
