1.Gather the necessary materials:
- Cider you wish to clarify
- Gelatin
- Cold Water
- Large bowl
- Wooden Spoon
- Fine Mesh Sieve
- Nylon Mesh Cloth or Coffee Filter
- Plastic Spatula
- Storage Container
2. Prepare the Gelatin Mixture:
- Dissolve the gelatin in a bowl of cold water according to the package instructions.
- Stir well to ensure the gelatin powder dissolves completely.
- Let the mixture sit and bloom for 5 minutes.
3. Add Gelatin to the Cider:
- Gently stir the gelatin mixture into the cider.
- Stir continuously for several minutes to evenly distribute the gelatin.
- Allow the cider to sit undisturbed for 15 minutes.
4. Check the Clarity:
- After 15 minutes, check the clarity of the cider.
- If it's still cloudy, let it sit for longer, up to 30 minutes or even overnight.
5. Skim the Scum:
- A layer of scum may form on the surface of the cider.
- Skim this scum off using a plastic spatula or spoon.
6. Fine Filtering:
- Set up a fine mesh sieve or colander over a storage container.
- Place a nylon mesh cloth or coffee filter inside the sieve to help filter out the remaining particles.
- Slowly pour the cider through the sieve into the storage container.
7. Cold Crashing:
- Place the storage container in a refrigerator or a cold environment.
- Cold crashing helps to further settle out any remaining particles.
- Let the cider cold crash for at least 12 hours or overnight.
8. Final Filtering (Optional):
- After cold crashing, you can optionally filter the cider again through a finer filter if desired.
- This will ensure maximum clarity.
9. Bottle and Enjoy:
- Once the cider is clear, you can bottle and store it in a cool, dark place.
- The clarified cider can be enjoyed on its own or as a base for various other cider recipes.
Remember that the amount of gelatin used will depend on the volume and quality of your cider. It's always a good idea to start with a smaller amount and gradually increase it if needed. You can adjust the ratio of gelatin to cider based on your preference and results.
