How to Germinate a Red Bean

All beans must germinate before putting out shoots and eventually producing edible fruit. Germination requires a medium, moderate moisture and warm temperature conditions for healthy and successful growth. You can germinate seeds directly in a garden bed or start them in paper towels to teach children about growing beans.

Instructions

    • 1

Fill pots or cups with well-draining soil or paper towels. Use clear cups if you'd like to see the beans sprouting. If planting the seeds in your garden, choose a well-drained location with a consistent temperature of at least 65 degrees Fahrenheit.

    • 2

Plant the seeds 1 inch deep in your potting material.

    • 3

Lightly water the seeds so the potting medium becomes moist but not damp. Beans may crack if planted in a medium with excessive water content. If it recently rained or is scheduled to rain soon, there is no need to add additional water to outdoor soil.

Wait three to 10 days for the beans to germinate.
