What Is the Importance of Water for Young Bean Plants?

Bean plants need water for several purposes, especially when the plants are young. Without adequate water the bean seeds won't sprout. Water is necessary to keep the bean seedling alive and healthy.
  1. Germination

    • The bean's hard shell must be soaked with water for germination to occur. Placing the beans in a container of water in a warm place for 24 hours speeds germination.

    Leaf Hydration

    • Bean seedlings have large leaves when compared to other seedlings like tomatoes, peas or peppers. The broad surface of the leaf increases evaporation. Ensure sufficient hydration for the leaves by making sure the soil is moist but not soggy. If a bean seedling wilts from lack of moisture, it may not recover.

    Nutrients

    • Water is the medium through which young bean plants absorb nutrients. Beans can only grow in a nutrient solution of water as long as the roots are exposed to some oxygen.
