How to Care for a Basil Plant in a Pot

Basil is an aromatic, flavorful addition to most any herb garden. Basil leaves do not hold up well to freezing, but can be used fresh off the plant, or preserved in cool temperatures or vinegar. Protect basil plants from cold. The leaves will not tolerate temperatures below 40 degrees Fahrenheit without browning. Basil plants can thrive in containers if you provide proper care and optimal conditions.

Instructions

    • 1

Place basil containers in a window that receives at least 10 hours of direct sunlight each day.

    • 2

Water the basil just until the soil is damp to avoid drying out the plant but do not overwater the plant as good drainage is important.

    • 3

Keep your basil plant in a warm area. Basil thrives on high temperatures, preferring summer heat for best growth.
