How to Plant Kale Flowers

Kale flowers, also known as ornamental kale, are cool-weather plants that have showy green and purple ruffles of foliage. Although ornamental kale is edible, cooks use it more as a garnish than as an additional ingredient. A close cousin to broccoli, cabbage and Brussels sprouts, kale flowers share a liking for well-drained, sunny soil. Kale flowers work well as border plants and add a touch of color to late-summer and autumn gardens.

Instructions

    • 1

Prepare a planting location for your kale flowers during the early fall, preferably August through September. Break up the soil in your chosen planting area using a pitchfork.

    • 2

Dig holes for the ornamental kale plants using a hand shovel. The holes should be the same height and depth as the plants' nursery containers. Space each hole 10 to 12 inches apart.

    • 3

Remove the kale flowers from their nursery containers. Deposit one plant in the center of each hole. Backfill the holes and pat the soil around each plant.

    • 4

Water the kale flowers deeply after planting, using a garden hose. Keep the soil moist to a 1-inch depth at all times throughout the growing season.
