How to Use Recycled Soda Bottles to make self watering planters

If you want an innovative way to recycle your empty soda bottles or those clear plastic water jugs, consider using them as a self watering planter. In these busy times it is difficult for many people to keep house plants anymore. If you forget to water and take care of them, they will dry out, wilt and die. Using a self watering system removes the burden of having to water plants on a daily or semi-daily basis. This is a wonderful family project for anyone with some DIY ability, and it will give good results for all of your plants.

Instructions

    • 1

Peel the label off of the bottle. You can use rubbing alcohol to help remove any extra traces if desired.

    • 2

With a sharp knife cut into the bottle about two-thirds up from the bottom. Finish cutting all the way around the bottle with the scissors. Using the scissors you will then trim all the way around the bottle to get a smooth edge.

    • 3

Remove the cap from bottle. Take your jute rope and tie a not in one end. Thread the dangling end of rope through the opening in the top of the bottle from the inside out. Pull it all the way through until the knot rests in the neck of the bottle. This will be your planter portion of the pot

    • 4

Place the top of the bottle upside down into the bottom of the bottle so that the wick you just made touches the bottom of your base.

    • 5

Fill the top part of the bottle with your potting mix, add a plant and place it into the piece you just made. The bottom part of the bottle will become your water reservoir and the top portion is now your planter. Fill the bottom with water and the water will wick up into the soil to keep it moist for weeks to come.
