Fruit Fly Maggots & Worm Composting

When kitchen scraps are composted, the scraps attract fruit flies, which are so small they are almost impossible to screen out. The result is that fruit fly maggots are often present in worm composting bins.
  1. Barrier

    • If fruit fly maggots are a problem when worm composting, a barrier will minimize how many flies can reach the compost. A piece of burlap or similar cloth can be used to cover the worm bedding and food scraps at all times.

    Vinegar

    • The fruit flies may actually be vinegar flies, which look the same. These flies can be trapped by placing an open jar of vinegar in one corner of the compost bin. The flies will be attracted to the vinegar, and many will drown before laying any eggs.

    Traps

    • Sticky traps can be placed in or on the worm composting bin to catch the fruit flies before they reach the compost. It is important that the traps don't contain any pesticide that could harm the worms.
