* Eggs (white or brown eggshells work well)
* White vinegar
* Water
* Containers used to hold both eggs and liquid (glass or ceramic)
* Spoons
* Tongs
* Colander
* Paper towels
* Natural egg dyes (such as red cabbage, turmeric, beets, red onion skins, blueberries, or spinach)
1. Boil the eggs
- Place eggs in a single layer in a large saucepan.
- Cover with cold water and add 1 tablespoon of vinegar per quart of water.
- Bring to a boil over medium high heat.
- Reduce heat to medium-low, cover, and simmer for 15 minutes.
- Remove from the heat and let cool in the water for a few minutes.
- Remove the eggs and pat them dry.
2. Prepare dyes
- Prepare natural egg dyes by chopping or grating vegetables or fruits.
- Place in jars and add enough water to cover.
- Bring to a boil, reduce heat, and simmer for 15- 30 minutes.
- Strain the liquid into a clean container and discard solids.
3. Dye Eggs:
- Using tongs or a spoon, place the eggs in the dye baths and let them sit for at least 30 minutes, or longer for more intense colors. The longer they sit, the more vibrant the colors will be.
- Stir occasionally to ensure even coloring. For even more vibrant and unique dye jobs, try placing rubber bands around the eggs or sticking dried edible flowers and leaves on the egg before dying.
- Remove eggs from the dye baths and place on a paper towel-lined surface.
- Let air dry completely.
4. Enjoy your naturally decorated and colored Easter eggs!
