How to Pave a Road With a Three Course Overlay

Paving a road requires expertise, manpower and large machines. Most people who tackle do-it-yourself projects don't have access to those things. The steps outlined in this article apply to someone who wishes to pave a small area of road (such as a driveway) with a three-course overlay on his own. However, it is essentially the same process used to pave a large road with three-course overlay and can be adapted for that purpose by using large machinery instead of small tools.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Prepare the road for paving. If the current pavement is in very bad condition, you must remove it and level the ground. Unless you have the experience and tools, it is better to hire a professional to do this for you. If you plan to pave over it, simply make sure the pavement is free of debris and dry.

    • 2

Apply a 4-inch layer of superpave base with the trowel. Cover the entire area you will be paving, but don't worry about making it look perfect.

    • 3

Run the smoothing paddle across the surface of the base until it is completely smooth. Allow the cement to dry completely, for a minimum of several hours, before proceeding.

    • 4

Apply a 2.5-inch layer of superpave binder with the trowel, covering the entire base layer.

    • 5

      Repeat Step 3.

    • 6

Apply a 1.5-inch layer of superpave top-wearing course with the trowel. Cover all the superpave binder.

    • 7

Repeat Step 3 or use a stamp roller to level out the road. The stamp roller will create a decorative design in the pavement while leveling it.
