How to Connect One Sprinkler in a Commercial Property

Adding a sprinkler to an existing commercial sprinkler system is an economical way to increase irrigation capacity. Sprinklers for commercial applications are larger than residential sprinklers, and have special requirements, but the installation process is similar.

Things You'll Need

  • String or rope
  • Hand trowel, shovel or trenching machine
  • PVC supply line
  • 2 hose clamps
  • Flat-head screwdriver
  • 1 90-degree PVC riser
  • Teflon tape

Instructions

    • 1

Decide where you want the sprinkler to be installed. Use a piece of string or rope to lay out the desired path between the installation point for the sprinkler and the sprinkler manifold.

    • 2
Dirt can be loosened using hand tools.

Dig a trench for the PVC supply line, using a hand trowel, shovel or trenching machine. Use the string or rope as a guide, and dig to a depth of about 10 inches.

    • 3

Lay the PVC supply line in the trench.

    • 4
Use a worm-drive clamp or pinch clamp.

Connect one end of the PVC pipe to an outlet valve on the sprinkler manifold, using a hose clamp. Place the hose clamp around the pipe and tighten it, using a flat-head screwdriver.

    • 5

Place a pipe clamp over the end of the supply line and insert a 90-degree PVC riser. Use the screwdriver to tighten the pipe clamp over the riser.

    • 6

Cover the screw threads on the sprinkler, using about three inches of Teflon tape. This will make a watertight connection.

    • 7
Water should flow evenly without obstruction from grass.

Screw the sprinkler into the PVC riser. Depending on the height of the sprinkler, you may need to adjust the depth of the trench so that the top of the sprinkler sits flush to the surface of the ground.

    • 8

Test the sprinkler by turning on the sprinkler manifold.

    • 9

Fill the trench with the dirt you removed in the second step. Pack the dirt with your foot so that it completely secures the supply line underground. Replace grass or rocks above as needed.
