Snow Thrower Tips

Snow throwers are useful tools for moving snow either at home of on commercial properties. They use an auger and spinning blades to force the snow up and through a chute, throwing the snow from a few feet to up to 30 feet, depending on the engine strength and weight of the snow. Snow blowers easily clear snow from walkways, driveways and decks, and with these tipis you can get the most out of your machine.
  1. Electric Snow Thrower for Smaller Jobs

    • An electric snow thrower is a low-cost option for removing low accumulations of snow from small driveways, short sidewalks, decks and patios. They are lighter than their gasoline-powered cousins and best for small properties or areas that don't get much snow. It must be plugged in and must be used with an approved electrical cord that is properly grounded. Take caution as to the condition of the cord and snow thrower due to chance of an electrical shock from a frayed or loose electrical connection.

    Proper Size

    • The majority of snow throwers feature gasoline-powered engines and range in size from 12 to 40 inched in width. Using the proper size equipment will ensure you clear snow more efficiently and economically. Small one-stage snow blowers are 12 to 18 inches wide and are designed to handle snow depths of less then 12 inches. Large two stage snow blowers have a second propeller to throw the snow and feature widths greater then 18 inches, which can handle snow depths up to 24 inches depending on the auger height. One-stage snow blowers are ideal for home use on small driveways and two-stage snow blowers are designed for larger driveways and commercial use.

    Use

    • Using a snow thrower is an easy task as long as it is done properly. Never use a snow thrower in areas where objects might be under the snow as it can damage the machine. Objects such as large rocks, balls or sticks can get thrown at high speeds and cause injuries or damage nearby objects. Start snow throwing from the middle of an area and work your way to the outside making passes to efficiently clear the snow without having to re-throw it.

    Maintenance

    • Maintaining your snow thrower will help it work properly and last for years. Snowfall season lasts only a few months and your snow thrower should have gas stabilizer added during the off season. Be sure to spray the auger with a lubricant to prevent rust, and keep the machine covered during storage months. Before snow season begins, you should empty the gas tank of old fuel, change the engine oil, and if necessary replace the spark plug to ensure optimum performance.
