Tractor Snowplow Tips

Snow removal is required in much of the northern United Stated due to snowstorms and lake effect snow. Owners of tractors can put use them to plow snow in the winter. Tractor snowplowing is an ideal solution to plowing driveways and small parking lots, preventing the strain involved in shoveling.
  1. Types

    • Choosing the correct snowplow will depending on the size of your tractor and how it lowers the blade. For small garden tractors, a small 3- to 4-foot-wide blade mounts to the frame and has a manual lowering mechanism. Larger tractors such as small farm tractors and midsize personal tractors have hydraulically powered plows operated by a control pad similar to a truck plow. Never mount a snowplow that is too large for your tractor, as it will cause damage and won't plow efficiently.

    Maintenance

    • Properly maintaining your snowplow will prevent rust and keep it in good condition for years. After the winter season, wash any salt and dirt from the snowplow to prevent corrosion. Touch up any bare metal areas with paint, or the exposed metal will rust. Oiling the moving parts will ensure they will work freely when you use the plow next season Ideally, store your plow indoors covered with a tarp to prevent the sun and elements from aging it prematurely.

    Safety

    • Safety should be a concern while snowplowing with your tractor, as you cannot see any items hidden under the snow. Before the winter season, mark the area you plan to plow clearly using stakes. Only plow within the marked area to prevent damage to your yard, landscaping, walkways and other objects. Be aware of other people and children within your plowing area.

    Plowing

    • Tractor snowplows pivot, allowing you to push the snow to one side. Start in the middle of your work area, and plow to the outside. Push the snow far enough back to allow it to pile in your designated areas. Small tractors can have trouble pushing deep or wet snow and should have tire chains installed to give extra traction. For heavier snow, pushing narrow strips at a time will lower the stress on your tractor and snowplow, resulting in fewer breakdowns.
