How to Finish a Driveway

Finishing a concrete driveway is the final part of the process, but it leaves plenty of room for error. Overworking the surface or trying to smooth it before bleed water re-absorbs into the slab are common but avoidable mistakes. The finishing process, while uncomplicated, entails close attention to details and managing time so you're able to manipulate the surface before it begins to set.

Instructions

    • 1

Drag a screed or straightedge over the top to strike off excess concrete and level out low areas. Have two people stand on opposite sides and pull a board slightly longer than the width of the driveway back and forth down the length of the driveway.

    • 2

Press magnesium or wood bull float over the wet surface. Work quickly to complete the entire surface before bleed water seeps up, which happens within about 15 minutes of the pour.

    • 3

Wait for the bleed water to reabsorb or evaporate. Smoothing or leveling concrete with water present will weaken the concrete and cause flaking once it dries.

    • 4

Push a stiff shop broom over the surface. The narrow grooves will improve traction, especially when the surface is wet. Skip this step if you intend to stamp the concrete to add a more decorative finish.

    • 5

Cover the driveway with canvas or another breathable fabric and moisten the fabric for about a week. Continuous moisture prevents the concrete from drying out too quickly as it cures.

    • 6

Seal the concrete with penetrating sealer and a roller brush to fill the pores and repel water.
