Missouri Septic System License Requirements

The State of Missouri does not have specific licenses for septic systems, though the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services regulates wastewater treatment for onsite septic systems with a flow rate of less than 3,000 gallons per day. These regulations need to be followed when installing, repairing or upgrading a septic system.
  1. Construction Permit Required

    • The individual or company constructing a waste treatment system needs to have an onsite wastewater treatment construction permit; these are handled at the county level. To find out the exact permitting authority, contact your Local Health Services office, at the municipal or county level.

    Nuisance Regulations

    • No person in the state of Missouri may operate an onsite waste treatment (septic tank) system that discharges into surface waters, or transport the effects of such a treatment system in any way that would constitute a hazard to health, or present a nuisance to other property owners.

    Minimum Spacing Requirements

    • Single family homes may not place their septic tank systems within 360 feet of another family's septic system, and may not place them closer than 10 feet from the property line to and adjacent the property.
