• The most functional design for a backyard path often depends on how it will be used. Choose a straight path of sturdy concrete pavers for getting to your car or garage quickly and easily. You will appreciate the direct route and firm footing when transporting an armful of groceries or household supplies. For a garden path, choose a design with curves. A meandering walkway is enticing and compels your visitors to slow down and to admire your display. Incorporate a wider area along the walk to accommodate attractive seating, and aim your path toward a dramatic focal point. Whenever possible, ensure that your path is at least 4 feet across to allow two people to walk abreast.

Surface Materials

• Natural stones, such as flagstone, are one of the more expensive options for a walkway. Flagstone, which includes limestone, bluestone, slate and sandstone, is striking and versatile. The irregular shapes along with varying colors, textures and sizes bring visual interest to any path. Obtain a custom look by trimming and fitting the pieces together like a puzzle.

  Concrete pavers and bricks come in several uniform sizes and colors. Turn them on the diagonal, or alternate colors for an interesting pattern. Install them tightly together in heavy traffic areas for a stable walk. Less expensive than natural stone, these materials are quite cost effective for covering a large path.

  For maximum flexibility and low cost, try gravel, bark mulch or similar fillers. Pine needles and shredded mulch are very comfortable underfoot and suit a rustic setting. These loose surface materials conform to any path shape and perform well under most traffic conditions.

Landscape Plantings

• Decorative plantings enhance the appeal of your walkway. To soften the look, choose plants that spill over the hard edges of the path. Most ornamental grasses and trailing ground covers accomplish the task. Plant scented ground covers in the spaces between stones and pavers to soften the overall appearance and to cushion the walk. These tough plants emit a pleasant aroma when crushed underfoot and will continue to thrive. For uniform paths through grass and sod, install compact plants and low-growing flowers alongside to add interest and a natural median.

Finishing Touches

• To give your path a finished look, add a few useful and decorative touches. Include a bench or swing as an accent and as a place to rest while enjoying the landscaping. Incorporate a water feature, dramatic planters or a grand sculpture at the end of your curvy path to reward visitors. Low-maintenance lighting along the way keeps you safely on the path once the sun goes down.
