How to Kill Mesquite Trees in Texas

Option 1: Cut the tree down

- Step 1: Get rid of the leaves and small branches on the mesquite tree.

- Step 2: Cut into the trunk of the tree around 6 inches off the ground, making sure to cut all the way through the bark and into the wood.

- Step 3: Pour some herbicide on the stump to kill the root system.

Option 2: Use root killer

- Pick a chemical that won’t harm any nearby plants. For example, you could use Tordon 22K or Arsenal AC.

- Mix enough of the chemical with water according to the directions.

- Apply the mixture to the base of the tree trunk using a paintbrush or sprayer.

- The herbicide will kill the tree’s root system and eventually cause the tree to die.

Option 3: Use foliar spray

- Foliar sprays are usually more effective on younger, smaller trees.

- Choose a herbicide specifically designed for mesquite trees, such as triclopyr or glyphosate.

- Mix the herbicide with water according to the directions.

- Apply the mixture directly to the leaves of the mesquite tree.

*Note:*

Herbicides can be dangerous if not used properly. Always follow safety precautions such as wearing gloves, eye protection, and long-sleeved shirts.
