How to Propagate Winterberry

Winterberry, a type of holly, is a large shrub. It is used in gardens and landscapes for borders and focal points. It grows 6 to 12 feet with a short trunk and branches. Pruning is not necessary for winterberry plants, and it can make a nice showing without regular trimming. Winterberry can be either deciduous or evergreen, with the deciduous species being much more cold hardy than the evergreen varieties.

Instructions

    • 1

Gather berries from the plant during the winter. These berries have seeds in them and will be needed for propagation.

    • 2

Remove the fruit from the seed. Clean the seeds with water and a fine strainer.

    • 3

Store the seeds in a cool, dry place until spring. Keep the seeds separated, and store them in moist sand, in a cellar, basement or refrigerator.

    • 4

Turn the seeds in the sand at least once per week throughout the rest of the winter.

    • 5

Plant the seeds early in the spring in a prepared garden bed.
