How to Use Carpet As Mulch

Mulch is an important aspect of any outdoor landscaping project and is made of a variety of materials including bark, pine straw, hay and rocks. The purpose of mulch is to prevent moisture from evaporating out of the soil and to prevent weed and grass seed from sprouting. Although mulch is available at any home and garden center, you can also use items that you have around the house. One effective mulch is old carpet scraps.

Instructions

  Use a tape measure to determine the length and width of the area you want to cover with the carpet. For example, if you are laying it in between plant rows, measure the length and width of each row.

  Unroll the carpet scrap on the ground with the bottom facing upward. Transfer the measurement onto the carpet using the tape measure and a black marker.

  Cut along the marker lines using a sharp utility knife.

  Pick up the carpet and place it into the desired position on the ground with the backing facing upward.

  Walk along the top of the entire carpet piece to pack it down into the ground and secure it into place.

  Spread a 1-inch layer of pine straw, bark or other mulch on top of the carpet, if desired. This is not required, but serves to improve the appearance of the landscaping.
