Instructions for a Vegetable Ladder Trellis

Building vegetable ladder trellises for plants such as tomatoes is a simple project requiring only modest effort and expense. The materials are readily available and the time required depends on how many vegetable ladder trellises you're building. Skill with tools is not necessary and the finished trellis can be used to hide unsightly air conditioners, garbage cans or compost heaps. A vegetable ladder trellis supporting a bounty of tomatoes enhances the appearance of any garden.

Instructions

    • 1

Drive a 5-foot-long iron fence post into the ground to a distance of 1 foot, using a sledgehammer.

    • 2

Drive another fence post into the ground 2 feet away and at a 45-degree angle to the first one. Repeat the process with one more fence post 2 feet away from each of the others, forming a perfect triangle. Face the front of the triangle into the wind to protect the plant as much as possible.

    • 3

Wrap a section of heavy-duty wire grid concrete reinforcing wire that is 4 feet long and 4 feet high around the three posts, leaving the back of the triangle open.

    • 4

Attach the wire grid securely to the posts by twisting heavy-gauge wire around the posts and the wire grid, using pliers. Attach the wire grid to the posts at 1-foot intervals from top to bottom.

    • 5

Place the vegetable plant in the center of the triangle with easy access to the vegetable ladder trellis.
