How to Make Circle Corners for Lattice Gates

A lattice gate provides a light and airy appearance to the garden. With the simple addition of wood rounds to the corners and a 1-by-4 trim board around the edges, the gate is transformed into a decorative entrance to a formal garden. The circle corners on the gate complement a contemporary, Victorian or Asian garden theme without distracting from the surrounding greenery and flowers.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the height and width of the gate opening.

    • 2

Build the gate's frame with 2-by-4 lumber. Cut two horizontal boards 1 inch less than the width of the gate opening. Cut two vertical boards 6 inches shorter than the finished gate's height.

    • 3

Arrange the boards in a rectangle on a flat surface. Butt the vertical boards' ends
to the sides of the horizontal boards.

    • 4

Predrill two holes through the horizontal boards and into each vertical board. Screw the boards together with 4-inch deck screws.

    • 5

Lay a 2-by-4 board diagonally across the frame, with the sides touching the horizontal boards. Draw a straight line across the board where it intersects each vertical board.

    • 6

Cut both ends of the diagonal board along the pencil lines. Insert into the gate frame, with the lower edge on the hinge side of the gate. Predrill two holes through each side of the frame and into the diagonal board. Screw together with 3-inch deck screws.

    • 7

Measure and cut the lattice to the exact width and 4 inches taller than the gate's frame. Set the frame to the side.

    • 8

Place a 6-inch wood round over the corner of the lattice, butting it to the sides. Trace the curve of the round onto the lattice. Remove the round and trim the lattice along the line with a jigsaw. Repeat in the three other corners.

    • 9

Place a wood round under each curved corner of the lattice. Overlap the lattice and round, aligning the edges of the lattice to the outer curve of the round. Predrill two holes through each piece of lattice and into the round. Screw the lattice to each round with 1/2-inch deck screws.

    • 10

Measure the distance between the four rounds. Trace the curve of the round onto the ends of the 1-by-4 boards. Cut the boards to size and shape with a jigsaw. Insert between the rounds, over the lattice. Predrill through the lattice and into the 1-by-4 boards. Screw the lattice to the boards.

    • 11

Place the lattice panel on top of the gate's frame. Center from top to bottom and align the sides. Predrill through the 1-by-4 boards and into the frame. Screw together with 3-inch deck screws.

    • 12

Attach the hinges and latch to the gate according to the package directions.
