How to Get a Yellow Marker out of a White Carpet

Bright yellow markers add to your child's masterpiece but not when the canvas is your white carpeting. Permanent marker stains on your carpet present double trouble -- the colorful pigment and oily base. To remove this eyesore from your carpet, you must use stain removal techniques and cleaning supplies that get out the bright stain without spreading it further into the carpet fibers. While a white carpet shows every stain, you can get rid of the ink and leave no evidence behind.

  • Talcum powder

Instructions

Absorbing oil and moisture with powder prevents the marker stain from spreading.

Cover the yellow marker stain on your white carpet with talcum powder. Leave the powder there for 20 minutes to absorb oils and excess moisture.

    • 2

Vacuum the carpeting to remove the talcum powder.

    • 3

Pour 2 cups of warm water into a bowl. Add 1 tablespoon each of dishwashing detergent and white vinegar. Stir the ingredients until mixed well.

    • 4

Moisten a clean cloth with the vinegar and detergent solution. Sponge the yellow marker stain to moisten it. Press a dry cloth into the marker stain to absorb it. Repeat this step to remove as much of the yellow marker as possible.

    • 5

Rinse your white carpet by blotting it with a damp cloth.

A soft sponge won't damage carpet fibers.

Pour rubbing alcohol onto a clean sponge to tackle the remaining yellow marker stain. Wring out the excess moisture. Dab at the yellow stain to remove it. Press a dry cloth into the white carpeting to absorb the stain and alcohol. Allow the carpeting to air-dry.

Apply a damp cloth to your white carpet and blot any remaining yellow marker stain. If any traces of yellow pigment remain, sponge them with a solution made from 1 tablespoon of ammonia, 1 teaspoon of dishwashing detergent and 2 cups of warm water. Alternately, sponge the carpet with the ammonia solution and blot it with a dry cloth every five minutes, for 30 minutes total.
