Instructions

    • 1

Soak the stained area immediately in a salt solution made with approximately 1 cup of warm water and 1 tablespoon of salt. You may want to keep this solution on hand while working with silver nitrate for such accidents.

    • 2

Rub the salt water into the stain for one to two minutes, then rinse the silver nitrate from the shirt under cold running water. If the stain is successfully removed, launder the shirt as normal. If the stain is still present, proceed to the next step.

    • 3

Apply liquid potassium iodide to cover the stained area. Rub it in for one minute and then clean the area with a dab of laundry detergent and water. Rinse thoroughly and launder.

    • 4

Dilute chlorine bleach with nine parts water and pour it on any remaining stains if the shirt is bleach-safe. After one minute, flush away the bleach under cold running water. Then, launder the shirt as normal.
