How to Avoid Brush Marks in Polyurethane

## How to Avoid Brush Marks in Polyurethane

Polyurethane is a great choice for finishing wood projects, but it can be tricky to apply without leaving brush marks. Follow these tips to get a smooth, professional finish.

1. Use a high-quality brush.

The quality of your brush can make a big difference in the finished product. Look for a brush with soft, synthetic bristles that are flagged (split at the ends).

2. Stir the polyurethane thoroughly before using it.

This will help to ensure that the finish is evenly mixed and free of any lumps.

3. Apply the polyurethane in thin coats.

Multiple thin coats will give a smoother finish than one thick coat.

4. Sand between coats.

Use 220-grit sandpaper to smooth out any rough spots or brush marks. Be sure to wipe away the dust before applying the next coat.

5. Let each coat dry completely before sanding or applying the next coat.

The drying time will vary depending on the type of polyurethane and the temperature and humidity of the room.

6. Use a tack cloth to remove any dust or debris before applying the final coat.

7. Apply the final coat with a light touch.

Don't press too hard on the brush, as this can cause the finish to bubble.

8. Let the final coat dry completely before moving or using the project.

The polyurethane will continue to harden and cure for several days, so be patient before putting the project into use.
