How to Store Mussels Overnight

To store mussels overnight, follow these steps:

1. Select Fresh Mussels: Before purchasing mussels, check for freshness. Make sure the shells are tightly closed and firm, with no broken or cracked shells. Avoid mussels with open shells or those with foul odors.

2. Soak in Saltwater: Place the mussels in a large bowl or container filled with cold, salted water. Use a ratio of one tablespoon of salt for every gallon of water. Soaking the mussels in saltwater helps them purge any sand or sediment from their shells.

3. Refrigerate: Put the bowl or container with salted water and mussels in the refrigerator. Make sure the mussels are completely submerged in the water. Cover the container with a lid or plastic wrap to prevent contamination.

4. Discard Open Mussels: Before cooking, inspect the mussels again. Discard any mussels that have opened or have broken shells. These are likely not safe to consume.

5. Use within 24 hours: Mussels should be stored overnight and are generally best consumed within 24 hours for the best quality and flavor.
