How to Maintain a Sanitized Oak Toilet Seat

Oak toilet seats provide a warmer look than typical white plastic seats, but wood needs to be cared for differently to maintain sanitation and to keep the seat smooth. Oak, a porous wood, absorbs most liquid. A toilet seat comes in contact with several potentially harmful fluids that could cause bacteria to breed in the seat. Damaged oak will also form splinters, which can cause injury to you when you use the toilet.

Things You'll Need

• Bucket
• Mild dish soap
• Soft-bristled scrub brush
• Clean cloth
• Disinfectant spray
• Dry towel

     Fill a bucket with 1 gallon of warm water, and add 1 teaspoon of mild dish detergent.

     Apply the soapy water to both sides of the oak toilet seat. Using a soft-bristled scrub brush, scrub gently in small circles to cleanse the entire surface.

     Wipe the toilet seat with a clean, dry cloth to remove the soapy water.

     Spray an even mist of disinfectant over both sides of the seat.
