How to Clean a Salty Floor

Dry and wet salt and salt mixture spills or transfer on floors may consist of table salt, sodium chloride, or other ingredients such as calcium chloride, magnesium chloride, urea and even ammonium nitrate. If you drag de-icing salts from outdoors during winter or sea salt from the beach into your home, a salty floor may also have other debris on it such as rocks or sand. Whatever the material composition, if you don’t clean your floor quickly it may lose its shine or become scratched. To clean a salty floor, you must remove loose debris and then wash the floor thoroughly to remove all residues.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove loose salt and other debris from your hard floors with a vacuum or broom and dustpan.

    • 2

Fill a bucket with hot water. Dunk a sponge or microfiber mop head in the bucket two or three times. Remove the mop and wring excess water from the head.

    • 3

Wipe your salty floor with your mop using forward-and-back or side-to-side motions. After approximately every 2 feet, dunk the mop in the water to rinse out the head, wring out the head and then continue cleaning. If the water gets extremely dark with dirt as you clean, discard it and get fresh water.

    • 4

Discard the water in the bucket after you have wiped the entire floor. Wash the bucket with hot water and mild detergent. When finished, rinse the bucket to remove detergent or other residues.

    • 5

Refill the bucket with hot water. Add commercial floor cleaner into the water as indicated on the cleaner label. Dunk the mop head into the bucket two or three times and then wring it out.

    • 6

Wash the entire floor again with the cleaner. If you find any stains, scrub them away with a soft scrub brush. Discard dirty water and refill the bucket as needed.

    • 7

Dump the wash water and replace it with fresh cold water. Rinse out the mop head under running hot tap water for three minutes.

    • 8

Mop away the cleaner residue with the cold water and the mop and then dry the floor thoroughly with absorbent lint-free cloths or towels.
