Is There Something to Put on Window Glass to Cut Back on the Heat?

Over time, your window seals will wear out and your home's siding might begin to develop hairline cracks. Both of these issues affect your home's insulation capabilities. Replacing the windows or resealing them can be expensive and complicated. Choose quick short-term fixes to increase insulation and allow you to cut back on the amount of heat you use in your home.
  1. Window Insulation Kit

    • Window insulation kits include a piece of thick plastic that provides an extra layer of protection between your home and your window glass. To use it, clean the window completely and attach the plastic to the window frame with double-sided tape. Then use a hairdryer to shrink the plastic to the frame to enhance the seal. This still will allow you to see through the window, but it can make it look cloudy.

    Vinyl or Rubber Stripping

    • Vinyl or rubber stripping is self-adhesive insulation that you press against the areas on your window that are drafty. To do this, measure the windows carefully and cut the vinyl or rubber stripping. Peel off the self-adhesive and press it against the window frames or any other areas that are letting in cold air. This does not cover the window, so it does not provide insulation from the window glass. It can, however, blend in well with the window and allow you to see out of it normally.

    Felt

    • Felt is wool fabric that holds heat in a room well. Use it to insulate your windows by nailing it around your window. This prevents you from seeing out the window and it will also block the light, but it will prevent drafts from making your room very cold.

    Heavy Curtains

    • Heavy curtains have a tight weave that helps to block out the cold and prevent drafts from moving into your home. Purchase heavy curtains from a hardware or home improvement store. Choose a brand that is specifically designed to prevent drafts. Alternatively, purchase fabric and make your own drapes. These can block out sunlight, but you can open or close them easily to adjust for outside temperature.
