How to Build an Onion Box

Onions are best when stored in a cool, dry place with plenty of air. Putting them in a refrigerator provides too much cold and shortens their lives. The best place for onions is in an onion box, which can be stored in your pantry or on a countertop. This simple box keeps onions out of sight, but still allows airflow keeping them fresh.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut three 9-by-11-inch pieces of 3/4-inch plywood with a saw.

    • 2

Stand the 11-inch edge of one piece of plywood along the 11-inch edge of another, creating the base and back of the onion box.

    • 3

Attach the pieces of wood with wood glue and 1-1/2 inch finishing nails, hammered in every 3 inches.

    • 4

Cut two 9-inch pieces of 2-by-2-inch board.

    • 5

Stand the 2-by-2-inch pieces in the front corners of the base. Glue and nail them in place through the bottom of the base. These support the box’s sides and front.

    • 6

Cut two 9-by-9 3/4-inch pieces of pegboard, and an 11-by-9 3/4-inch piece.

    • 7

Nail the pegboard pieces to the sides and front of the box.

    • 8

Attach the final piece of plywood to the top with two small hinges attached to the back of the box, using the screws included with the hinges. This will allow you to open and close the box.
