How to Strip Wax Off Furniture

Spraying polish on furniture helps to add shine and luster to wood surfaces. After months of polish applications, however, the furniture loses its shine and appears dull. The cloudy appearance occurs from wax buildup. Restoring shine back to the furniture involves removing the wax. Wax removal requires using special tools and products so the furniture does not endure damage during the removal process.

Instructions

    • 1

Wipe dust from the furniture with a clean cloth before applying the wax polish remover. Remove dust from legs of furniture, and rub deep with the cloth into any crevices.

    • 2

Pour a quarter-size amount of wax polish remover onto a clean cloth. Wipe over the entire surface of the furniture. Add additional polish remover to the cloth as needed to ensure the furniture is properly covered.

    • 3

Rub the furniture surface gently with a #0000 steel wool pad, using circular motions to loosen the old wax. Scrub tiny crevices in the furniture with an old toothbrush, to loosen wax buildup that has accumulated.

    • 4

Strip the loosened wax from the furniture with a soft, lint-free cloth. Fold the cloth, exposing a clean area as you continue to remove wax from the furniture. Use additional cloths when one becomes too saturated with the old wax.

    • 5

Spray a furniture polish over the stripped furniture to restore shine to the surface. Buff the furniture to a high sheen with a clean cloth.
