How to Hook Up a Bissell Carpet Cleaner

The settings on a Bissell carpet cleaner allow it to clean delicate wool and oriental rugs, as well as traditional carpet fabrics. Bissells don't come assembled; you'll need to screw and snap a few pieces together before you can use the machine. Before shampooing the carpet, vacuum it thoroughly to pick up any loose dirt, hair and dust, then spray a pretreatment solution over stained and soiled areas of the carpet.

Instructions

  1. Assemble

    • 1

Slide the Bissell's upper handle onto the lower handle with your hands.

    • 2

Feed the power cord connected to the lower handle of the shampooer through the hole in the tool caddy.

    • 3

Place the tool caddy flat against the back of the Bissell shampooer. Line the screw holes in the caddy with those in the upper handle and base.

    • 4

Insert the two screws into the two top holes on front side of the upper handle into the tool caddy. Screw them with your hand until snug. Secure them with the included hex nuts.

    • 5

Insert the two screws into the two bottom holes on the front side of the tool caddy. Push them through the lower handle. Screw them with your hand until snug, and secure them with the included hex nuts.

    • 6

Snap the included accessories into the tool caddy.

    • 7

Wrap the power cord and hose around the power cord quick release bracket.

    Shampooing

    • 8

Pull off the bladder from the Bissell shampooer. Fill the bladder with hot tap water up to the fill line. Put the bladder back in position.

    • 9

Remove the SmartMix concentrate bottle near the tank. Unscrew the cap, and fill the bottle up to the fill line with the carpet shampoo. Replace the cap back on the bottle, and replace it in the machine.

    • 10

Select the SmartMix setting that suits the job. Use "Water Rinse" for gentle cleaning or final rinsing, "Normal" for the best mix for most cleaning jobs, and "High Traffic" to dissolve heavy soil.

    • 11

Plug the Bissell shampooer to the power outlet. Flip the "SmartTemp" switch into the "On" position. Don't turn this feature on when cleaning delicate wools or oriental rugs. Flip the power switch into the "On" position, then wait two minutes for the machine to heat up.

    • 12

Press the trigger on the upper handle, then push the shampooer forward. Release the trigger, then backward over the same area. Repeat the process to clean the entire carpet.
