How to Mount a Smoke Detector

Smoke detectors, when properly mounted and maintained, can save lives by sounding an alarm in the event of a fire. Early warning enables you and your family to escape safely. The death rate in home fires is twice as great for residences without a working smoke alarm, according to the National Fire Protection Association. While smoke detectors that are wired into the home's electrical circuit should only be installed by an electrician, homeowners can easily install the battery powered models.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose the location for your smoke detector. Do not select a location where a draft could prevent smoke from reaching the detector. Ceiling mount detectors need to be placed a minimum of 18 inches from corners and walls. Wall mount detectors should be placed a minimum of 18 inches from a corner and 6 to 12 inches below the ceiling.

    • 2

Measure to fix the location for the detector to ensure you are allowing enough clearance. Measure from the ceiling down for wall mount detectors. Measure from the wall out for ceiling mount detectors. Draw a pencil line to mark where the leading edge of the detector will go.

    • 3

Remove the back from your smoke detector and insert the battery. Before replacing the cover, hold it in position where you plan to mount the detector and trace the screw holes with a pencil.

    • 4

Drill starter holes for the mounting screws. Insert the screws and tighten with a screwdriver.

    • 5

Replace the back on the smoke detector. Carefully slide the smoke detector onto the screws and tug until it is firmly in place.

    • 6

Test the alarm by pressing the "Test" button on the face of the smoke detector.
