How to Prevent Smoke Detector Disabling

A smoke detector warns the inhabitants of a home when there is potential danger from smoke inhalation or fire. Disabling a smoke detector for any reason is not advised. There are a few procedures that will make disabling the smoke detector too difficult to do. Household tools will be needed, but no special electrical skills. The smoke detector's functionality will not be compromised.

Things You'll Need

  • Heavy duty battery, 10-year life
  • Bonding glue
  • Perforated security cover
  • Self-tapping screws
  • Electric screwdriver, Phillips-head tip
  • Padlock
  • Locking latch
  • Locking latch plate

Instructions

    • 1

Twist the cover off the smoke detector. Replace the battery inside the battery compartment with a 10-year heavy duty battery. Apply bonding glue around the rim of the detector and around the rim of the cover. Twist the cover back on. Press the cover against the detector for a minute to adhere the two together. Once the glue sets, the battery powering the detector will not be removable.

Hold the perforated security cover with the open end facing away from you. Place the security cover over the smoke detector; the perforated holes will allow air to enter the detector's sensor for smoke sampling. Screw self-tapping screws through the pre-drilled holes in the side of the cover and into the wood studs in the wall; use an electric screwdriver to force the screws fully into the studs.

Place a padlock on the locking latch of the fuse box so that the circuit breaker supplying electricity to the hard-wired smoke detector can not be accessed. If there is no locking latch; mount a locking latch on the fuse box cover with bonding glue and screw a latch plate to the wall, next to the latch, with wood screws using an electric screwdriver. Apply bonding glue to the head of the screws to prevent them from being pulled out.
