How to Add a Smoke Detector to My Alarm

A wireless alarm system needs no wires to communicate between sensors and the control panel coordinating the protection of a home. To add a smoke detector to your wireless alarm system, connect a wireless smoke detector that can communicate with the control panel in the same fashion as the other sensors do. You can purchase a wireless smoke alarm that is compatible with the wireless alarm system from the same electronics store or speciality security center shop where the system was originally acquired. A few household tools will be necessary as well.

Instructions

Inform the off-site monitoring center, if you are paying for one, that you are disconnecting the wireless alarm system temporarily. Enter the security password into the control panel's keyboard or onscreen keyboard to deactivate the system.

Place a ladder against a wall in the room where you will place the wireless smoke detector; this might be a bedroom, the living room or a den. Open the battery compartment lid on the back of the wireless smoke detector. Insert the correct type of battery or batteries into the battery compartment and close the lid.

Screw the wireless smoke detector onto the wall near the ceiling with wood screws, using a Phillips screwdriver. Press the "Sync" button on the side of the wireless smoke detector. Go back to the control panel.

Navigate through the menus of the control panel until you come to the "Options" menu. Select this. Select "Activation" or "Syncing" from the menu choices -- the actual name depends upon the make of the wireless alarm system. The control panel now ''sees" that there is a smoke detector as part of the wireless alarm system. Navigate back to the home menu. Re-arm the system by entering the password again. Inform the off-site monitoring center, if there is one, that the system is again active.
