How to Disengage a Smoke Alarm or Stop It

A smoke detector works by making a loud shrieking noise when it detects smoke in a room. It is a good idea to have a smoke detector in most of your rooms, and it is legally required in many countries. However, a smoke detector can be quite a nuisance when its battery is low or if it becomes faulty. You will know that something is amiss with the smoke detector when it begins to let out a painful chirping noise.

Instructions

    • 1

Grasp the smoke detector cover and twist it off. Depending on the brand, the cover may still be attached to the smoke detector via wires. If so, let it hang down while you work. If it is not, set the cover in a safe place.

    • 2

Press the off button. Smoke detectors vary by manufacture, but look for the off button on the side of the alarm or in the center, once the cover is removed.

    • 3

Pull on the wires that attach the smoke detector to the battery to disengage them.

    • 4

Remove the battery from the smoke detector. Have the smoke detector serviced, then reinstall immediately.
