Security System Installation Tools

If you are thinking about installing your own security system you will need the proper tools. Wireless systems require few tools but if you are going to put in a hardwired system you will need more specialized tools.
  1. Wireless

    • To install a wireless security system you will need a standard screwdriver, a Phillips screwdriver, a drill and an assortment of bits.

    Hardwired

    • In addition to the tools needed for wireless installation, you will need a few more tools to drill through walls and run wires inside walls. Specific tools will be needed for different phases of the installation.

    Contacts, Sensors and Keypads

    • While door contacts can be installed on the door frame, professional installers embed them in the door frame. For this you will need a 3/8" drill bit and drill. Window contacts can be installed on the frame. If you are going through cinder block you will need a 3/8" concrete bit.

    Pulling Wire

    • Once you have drilled for your contacts, sensors and keypads you will have to pull the wire. To pull wire inside a wall you should use a piece (six feet is usually enough) of fish tape and some strong nylon cord.

    Control Panel

    • To install the control panel you will need a hole saw to drill the hole you route your wires through.
